La ballena azul es el mamífero mas grande en el mundo, y el animal más grande jamás conocido. Estas ballenas respiran aire, pero tienen su casa en el agua, lo que les ayuda a sostener el peso de su enorme cuerpo. Podemos encontrar a estos mamíferos en cualquier parte de casi cualquier océano, nadando en pequeños grupos o solas. En épocas de verano, suelen irse a aguas más frías. También realizan grandes migraciones hacia el ecuador cuando llega el invierno. Suelen verse en costas de California o Méjico.
Se alimentan de dril y pueden llegar a consumir entre 4 y 8 toneladas al día. Actualmente, solo sabemos que unas pocas ballenas nadan y surcan los océanos del mundo. Durante muchos años, las ballenas azules han sido cazadas de manera cruel y despiadada para obtener la grasa y el aceite, cuya consecuencia a sido un dramático descenso en el número de la población de ballenas.
En 1966 el Internacional Whaling Convetion puso a las ballenas bajo protección oficial. Como todos los grandes animales, tarda mucho en el proceso de gestación. Lleva a su cría en su interior durante un año antes de dar a luz.
